HCPS Mission for Performing Arts
The mission of the performing arts curriculum in Hanover County Schools is to equip students with the skills to communicate through music and drama, with the understanding that these art forms are an important universal language basic to our society and other cultures.
The Music Classroom
All Pole Green Gators have music class once a week for 45 minutes. Each grade focuses on discovering and experiencing music through speech, movement, instruments, song, and improvisation. It is our goal to arc the music program from kindergarten to fifth grade in a way that inspires musical creativity while equipping our students to confidently enter band, chorus, strings, and theater programs at Oak Knoll Middle School. During their time as a Gator, students learn music from around the world, play instruments like drums, ukuleles, and xylophones (to name just a few), and build life skills like curiosity and collaboration.
Bucket Drumming
Students in 5th grade may be a part of the bucket drumming ensemble. We meet on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. beginning in February and will continue rehearsal throughout May leading up to a performance.
All-County Elementary Chorus
The All-County Elementary Chorus consists of ten select fifth-grade singers from each elementary school in Hanover County. They perform annually (in April) at Hanover County's Arts & Sciences Festival. These students must be members of their elementary school chorus in order to audition for this all-county chorus.
Recorders
At Pole Green, we teach our fourth grade students how to play the recorder. Through fun tunes like Nacho Mama and Mt. Everest, students practice reading the music while performing the notes on their instrument. Each year, we strive to help student’s play their best and grow as a musician. We follow a recorder karate curriculum where each student may test to attain the next level bead. Students strive to achieve the coveted "Black Bead" level.
School Assemblies
Students attend assemblies that include special performances by the Richmond Symphony, Theatre IV, and other special guests. Students from local schools (Oak Knoll Middle and Hanover High) also visit throughout the year to pique PGES students’ interest in music.
Chorus
We invite all interested 4th and 5th graders to participate in chorus. This year, we will meet on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. throughout the fall beginning on Tuesday, September 27 and practice weekly until our performance on Thursday, December 15. If your student would like to join chorus, please fill out the form below.
Student Performance Opportunities
Each year we offer chances for students to display what they've been learning. Grade levels may be asked to perform at PTA meetings on Thursday evenings, parents may be invited to the music classroom during the day to watch a performance, and a grade level will share a concert or musical. This year, kindergarteners and 1st graders will share on separate PTA nights, 3rd and 4th grade parents will be invited to watch ukulele and recorder performances during the spring, and 2nd and 5th grade will have music shares toward the end of the school year. Specific times and dates will be shared closer to the events.
