HCPS Mission for Performing Arts

The mission of the performing arts curriculum in Hanover County Schools is to equip students with the skills to communicate through music and drama, with the understanding that these art forms are an important universal language basic to our society and other cultures.

The Music Classroom

All Pole Green Gators meet for music once a week for 45 minutes. In the kindergarten, first, and second-grade classes, we focus on singing, playing percussion instruments, and moving creatively. Experiencing and appreciating a variety of music styles is a large part of our lessons. We also focus on identifying instruments in the orchestra. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades begin learning how to identify the staff and locate and use music symbols. Their lessons include music from specific time periods and from specific instrument families.

We invite all fourth and fifth-grade students to participate in our chorus. We hold rehearsals after school on Tuesdays until 3:30 p.m. Students perform throughout the year.

All-County Elementary Chorus

The All-County Elementary Chorus consists of ten select fifth-grade singers from each elementary school in Hanover County. They perform annually (in April) at Hanover County's Arts & Sciences Festival. These students must be members of their elementary school chorus in order to audition for this all-county chorus.

At Pole Green, we teach our fourth and fifth-grade students how to play the recorder. Through familiar tunes and their knowledge of the staff, students learn how to play a minimum of five notes. Receiving a bead for learning each required song really motivates our Gators. Students strive to achieve the ultimate "Black Bead" level.

School Assemblies

Students attend assemblies that include special performances by the Richmond Symphony, Theatre IV, and other special guests. Students from local schools (Oak Knoll Middle and Hanover High) also visit throughout the year to pique PGES students’ interest in music.

Variety Show

Our school variety show provides students an opportunity to showcase their talents. We’ll be sure students receive all the information they need during the school day for this great event.

PTA Performances

We love to give our students an opportunity to showcase their talents by performing at PTA meetings. Every year, selected grade levels work towards staging a special musical performance.
