Mrs. Elizabeth Verlander is excited to join the Pole Green Elementary School (PGES) family as assistant principal. This is her 18th year in education in Hanover County Public Schools. Mrs. Verlander recently served as assistant principal at South Anna Elementary School. From 2016 through 2018, Mrs. Verlander served as the instructional technology resource teacher (ITRT) at Battlefield Park Elementary School, Cold Harbor Elementary School, and Laurel Meadow Elementary School. While serving in this ITRT role, Mrs. Verlander worked closely with students in pre-k through 5th grade, as well as with their many teachers and administrative teams. Prior to that appointment, Mrs. Verlander taught kindergarten and 1st grade for 15 years at Washington Henry Elementary School.

Mrs. Verlander holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s in elementary education, and a post-master’s certificate in educational leadership all from Virginia Commonwealth University. (Go, Rams!) She most recently completed all requirements of the Metropolitan Educational Teacher’s Alliance (META) Teacher Leadership Program earning her the state’s teacher leader designation. While Mrs. Verlander has completed a great deal of coursework, she is a “forever learner” and is committed to opening the doors for both staff and students to reach their fullest potential. She believes in the power of relationships and building a strong community and is devoted to doing just that at PGES!

Mrs. Verlander was nominated as Washington Henry’s beginning teacher of the year when her career in education first began in 2001. She was later nominated by her colleagues on three separate occasions to represent their school community as teacher of the year. She was also a former R.E.B. finalist. Mrs. Verlander is committed to continuous learning and instilling this passion for learning in all those around her.

Mrs. Verlander grew up in Mechanicsville and is a proud product of Hanover County Public Schools. She currently resides in Mechanicsville with her loving husband, Chris, and their six year old son, Bentley, who will be a 2nd grade Gator this school year. In her free time, Elizabeth loves getting lost in great books, exploring new technologies, shopping, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite summer places to be are reading a good book on the beach and partaking in river activities (boating, fishing, crabbing, and swimming) with her loved ones. Mrs. Verlander looks forward to meeting the PGES family and supporting your children as they grow to be great Gators accomplishing great things!
